What To Wear for Family Photos in Florida

Not sure what to wear for your next family photo session?

Yeah, I’ve been there.

I have spent my fair share of time wandering Target aisles, hoping for inspiration; raiding my children’s closets for clothes that will never materialize; and dissecting Pinterest boards, hoping to find outfit combos my family can replicate.

It is SO stressful.

I’m guessing you have enough stress in your life already without worrying about what to wear for your family photos, so I’ve got you covered.

Here are a few quick tips to help you decide what you want to wear and check this task off of your to-do list.

Take a look at your living room.

Wait, what? The living room? I know it sounds weird, but hear me out. A couple of years ago, I dragged my husband and kids out to the park for a family photography session in the woods. We wore brown, green, beige, denim — honestly, we looked amazing, if I do say so myself. When we got our pictures back from our photographer, I ordered canvas prints right away to hang on our living room walls. The canvases came in the mail, and they were stunning. But they didn’t match anything in my house. My house is bright and colorful and NOT beige-green-brown in the least. I hung the pictures up anyway, but it looks a little odd. The next year, I picked a location and wardrobe palette that matched my house, and I was happy to plaster those pictures all over the place. It’s worth thinking about!

Use a color palette with variety.

When I took pictures of my family with all of my in-laws, I knew we were going to need a very broad color palette to avoid looking all matchy-matchy. I didn’t want everyone to show up in a blue shirt; we needed some dimension! I found a Procreate color palette on Pinterest that had a really good variety while still looking coordinated. I sent that color palette to my MIL and SIL, and we all took turns checking off the different color swatches as we found clothes that matched them. It was super easy, and I loved how we all looked together.

You can find Procreate palettes for different seasons and moods, or you can use these free color palettes that I created for my favorite Florida photography locations.

    Focus on textures.

Too many patterns can be distracting in a picture, but textures? Have all the fun you want with textures. If it’s fall, you can go crazy with knit sweaters, corduroy jumpers, denim jackets . . . I could go on and on. In the winter, you might have some fun with velvet, suede, or faux fur. There are so many possibilities! Choose a variety of textures that will add depth to your photos. Just be sure to match the textures to the season; a cable-knit turtleneck in Florida is torture eleven months out of the year!
